In a significant development in the relationship between India and China, both countries have begun to implement a new border agreement aimed at de-escalating tensions in the Depsang and Demchok regions located in the Himalayas. This advancement comes after discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the recent BRICS Summit.
Although specific details of the agreement have not yet been made public, authorities have confirmed that the process of troop withdrawal from the Line of Actual Control has begun. This effort is supported by Russia as a mediator.
Sources from the Indian Army have stated: “The disconnection between India and China in Depsang and Demchok in eastern Ladakh has been completed. Coordinated patrolling will begin soon by both sides, and ground commanders will remain in contact to ensure effective implementation.”
The territorial dispute between India and China dates back decades, encompassing northern Kashmir and an area of nearly 60,000 square kilometers in Arunachal Pradesh. This historical conflict culminated in a war in 1962 and resurfaced in May 2020 with clashes between Chinese and Indian troops near Pangong Lake.
Since then, both countries have maintained a significant military presence in the region, with between 50,000 and 60,000 soldiers deployed until 2021. While negotiations and partial troop withdrawals took place in subsequent years, the conflict was not fully resolved. However, last week, India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced that agreements had been reached regarding patrolling along the line of control in Ladakh. The Indian Ministry of Defence also stated that total troop withdrawal is expected to be completed by the end of October.
For its part, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that joint operations between Indian and Chinese troops are progressing smoothly, suggesting a path toward greater stability in the region.
This agreement represents an important step toward reducing tensions between the two most populous nations in the world and could lay the groundwork for more constructive dialogue in the future.
