‘The Europeans continue down the aggressive path of sanctions, convinced of the need to continue the war,’ Peskov said.

On Monday, Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, stated that Russia sees no reason to resume dialogue with the European Union (EU) following the new package of sanctions imposed by Brussels on the occasion of the third anniversary of the start of the war.

“For now, we see no reason to resume dialogue. The Europeans continue down the aggressive path of sanctions, convinced of the need to continue the war,” he said.

“This European conviction contrasts sharply with the willingness to find a solution to the Ukraine conflict, which is what we are working on with the Americans,” Peskov declared.

On Monday, the EU implemented its sixteenth package of sanctions since the war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022.

This new expansion mainly targets measures adopted by Moscow to circumvent previous restrictions, meaning many of them affect companies from third countries that were exporting and importing products of interest to Russia.

The new measures include provisions to sanction the so-called “ghost fleet” through which Russia managed to continue exporting hydrocarbons. The Europeans have banned 74 ships from accessing ports and related services. So far, 153 non-EU oil tankers have been sanctioned.

Brussels also sanctioned 53 companies, accusing them of directly financing the Russian military complex. Among them are Russian, Turkish, Chinese, and other Asian firms.

The political agreement on the sanctions was reached after the EU was excluded from the peace negotiation process for Ukraine initiated by Russia and the United States. The formal adoption of the sanctions was symbolically carried out today, on the third anniversary of the conflict’s outbreak.
