The deadly bus accident took place close to Argentina's mountainous border with Chile.

A bus carrying a children's dance company crashed with a truck and turned over on a highway Sunday in the province of Mendoza, killing at least 15 people, according to local media.

Among them were minors from the dance group and their parents. Twenty-one people were hospitalized and at least 18 of them have already been transferred to a nearby shelter.

The bus was driving on Route 144, a few kilometers from the city of San Rafael, in a mountainous area called Cuesta de los Terneros close to the Andes mountains, a road with several curves close to the border with Chile.

Authorities say the car was driving the students to participate in a dance competition at Teatro Roma in San Rafael. The bus had left the area of Gran Borg in Buenos Aires, and the time of the accident was leaving Malargüe, with 40 passengers.

Authorities from the state of Mendoza said they are still investigating the causes of the accident, but believe high speed could be a factor in the crash. Just months ago, a similar tragedy shook Mendoza, when at least 20 people died in another bus accident on route to Chile on February 18, 2017.
