According to the news outlet's report, there are 23 metropolitan areas across the North American nation that are experiencing a decline in population.
Statista said that the U.S. population is at 323 million as of April 2016. They said that 81 percent of the people in the United States live in cities or suburbs.
“The website 24/7 Wall St. analyzed the downward population trends using U.S. Census Bureau data,” Statista said. “It found that Farmington, New Mexico, is the fastest-shrinking city in America, having experienced a population decline of 8.76 percent between 2010 and 2015.”
Farmington is well-known for low-income households as well as high rates of violent crime that far exceeds the national average.
Pine Bluff, Arkansas, is one of the other cities reporting a fall in population. The city has recorded a 6.38 percent drop during the same timeframe between 2010 and 2015.
This Arkansan city also “has low income levels per capita, coupled with high rates of violent crime.”
And then there's Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where the population has declined 4.92 percent.
