Flash Flooding Leaves Several Dead in Mallorca

Some 10 people have been killed following flash flooding caused by 20 centimeters (almost 8 inches) of rainfall in a four-hour period on the island of Mallorca in Spain, according to The Guardian.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who visited the island, announced that Sant Llorenc would be declared a disaster zone. The PM also took the opportunity to extend condolences to the victims’ families, adding that the area “can count on the government’s support in getting back to normal as soon as possible.”

“It all happened in less than 10 minutes,” a witness said describing the flood to public broadcaster TVE. “We had to swim to try to survive.” Videos and images of the region showed cars being washed away as well as dozens of other damaged vehicles covered with debris.

Rescue efforts are being undertaken by local emergency services with the support of specialized military and police units. Officials said more than 600 people from rescue and medical crews were posted at make-shift emergency relief centers that had been set up in sports halls.

Rafael Nadal, multiple grand slam-winning tennis ace, who hails from Mallorca, offered to open his sports center and tennis academy to people displaced by the floods.

“Our most sincere condolences to the loved ones of the victims of the serious floods in Sant Llorenc,” the athlete communicated through social media.
