Images have surfaced of Israelis in Sderot watching joyfully as bombs fall over Gaza.

Amid the worst Israeli offensive against Gaza in years, some Israeli civilians have taken to watching the bombs fall.

On Wednesday, Danish journalist Allan Sorensen posted a photograph on Twitter of a group of around 50 Israelis allegedly cheering on the deadly bombardment. According to Sorensen, the photo was taken on a hilltop outside the Israeli town of Sderot. Sorensen has stated the hilltop had become a scene “most closely resembling the front row of a reality war theater”.

He said it was like a “cinema”, complete with popcorn brought up the hill by viewers. In the photo posted by Sorensen on Twitter, a handful of people can be seen sitting on plastic chairs, grinning with bottles of soft drink on the ground.

“Clapping when blasts are heard,” the caption read.

Twitter users criticized the Israelis.

“If this is true then God help us all. What's become of the human race?” One Twitter user responded.

“This is the most gruesome image I've seen the last few days,” another tweeted.

According to The Independent, “further images have since emerged showing larger crowds on subsequent days - suggesting that the so-called 'Sderot cinema' was far from a one-off”.

Over 160 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli air strikes on Gaza. So far, no Israeli deaths have been reported during the six days of violence.
