A slew of musicians are cancelling upcoming shows in the state of North Carolina because of a new discriminatory law.

The pop band Maroon 5 have joined a string of artists cancelling shows in the state of North Carolina, in protest against the state’s anti-LGBT law, according to a statement on the band’s website Friday.

"This was a difficult decision for us to make as a band," the group said in the statement as published in W Mur. "We don't want to penalize our fans in North Carolina by not performing for them, but in the end it comes down to what we feel is morally right."

The group have decided to cancel two of their upcoming shows in the towns of Charlotte and Raleigh that were to take place in September.

Other cancellations have been made by artists like Bruce Springsteen, the E Street Band, Pearl Jam, Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato. Cirque du Soleil also dropped its North Carolina shows.

Companies have also disapproved of the state’s new law. Deutsche Bank and PayPal are no longer planning on expanding operations in North Carolina.

The new statewide law, HB2, requires people to use the bathroom of the gender listed on their birth certificate. Passed in March, it has drawn a lot of criticism for being transphobic.
