On Monday, on the 57th anniversary of his death, Mexican painter Diego Rivera was remembered by dozens of artists and local authorities.
The event was held in the Rotunda of Illustrious Persons, in the Civil Pantheon of Dolores cemetry, where the most honorable Mexicans are buried.
Rivera is considered one of the most important Mexican painters and artists of all time. He gained world popularity for the murals he painted in several Mexican government buildings that narrate Mexican history. He also married Frida Kahlo, the Mexican surrealist painter.
Monday’s commemoration was lead by Rivera’s daughter, Guadalupe Rivera Marin, who asserted that her father, apart from being a famous communist, was a “true Mexican” who defended the Mexican society and the plurality of it.
Rivera Marin also called on Mexican society to unite in the face of the current political crisis that the country is facing after 43 students of the Ayotzinapa Teacher Training College were disappeared on September 26 by police of Iguala, Guerrero.
Meanwhile, the director of the National Institute for Fine Arts, Maria Cristina Garcia Cepeda, recalled that Rivera is one of the forerunners of Mexican muralism and the Mexican Painting School.
