Hailing efforts by the country’s president and foreign minister, Ayatollah Khamenei said nuclear deal will not change Tehran's relations with the U.S.

The Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Saturday that the nuclear deal between his country and the world powers, led by the United States, will not change Tehran's policy towards Washington.

"We have repeatedly said we don't negotiate with the U.S. on regional or international affairs; not even on bilateral issues. There are some exceptions like the nuclear program that we negotiated with the Americans to serve our interests," Khamenei said in televised speech.

The Iranian top religious leader added that his country would never give up on its regional allies and the people of Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and Bahrain. “Even after this deal our policy towards the arrogant U.S. will not change," he said.

The recent deal finalized Tuesday would limit Iran's nuclear capability to only a civilian nuclear program, allowed to all nations under international treaties. Under the agreement, the world powers including the United States, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia, agreed to terminate sanctions imposed on Tehran.

The majority of the Iranian people welcomed the deal as most economic sanctions will be removed, allowing the country to expand its economic ties with the outside world.

While stressing that the accord has not yet been approved in Iran or signed into law, Khamenei hailed the efforts of the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in securing the deal after almost two years of negotiations.

“They really took pains and worked hard,” Khamenei said. “The text that has been prepared, whether it is approved or not, they have done their part and they should have their reward.”

Khamenei's comments come days after U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said that military action against Iran was still on the table, despite the agreement.
