Hillary Clinton appears to have finally smashed the proverbial glass ceiling Tuesday as she has become the first woman presidential candidate of a major U.S. party.
“Tonight’s victory is not about one person,” said Clinton. “It belongs to generations of women and men who struggled and sacrificed and made this moment possible.”
Clinton won South Dakota, New Mexico, New Jersey Tuesday evening and was declared the winner of California early Wednesday morning by the Associated Press as she leads Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders 56 to 43 percent with 94 percent of the vote counted. Sanders won North Dakota and Montana. He told supporters Tuesday night that he will continue to compete, and is looking forward to next week's primary in Washington, D.C.

"We are going to fight hard to win the primary in Washington, D.C., and then we will take our fight for social, economic, racial, and environmental justice to Philadelphia," said Sanders. "I am pretty good at arithmatic that the fight in front of us is a very, very steep fight, but we will cotninue the fight for every vote and every delegate we can."
The Democratic National Convention will be held July 25-28 in Philadelphia.
