After 7,000 performances, the Disney Broadway musical grossed over US$6.2 billion.

The Lion King Musical has generated more box office income than any other production in any entertainment medium, Walt Disney Company said on Monday.

With a worldwide gross of over US$6.2 billion, the play surpassed the US$6 billion-earning of Andrew Loyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera late this summer, according to representatives from both stage shows.

In film industry, Jame Cameron's Avatar holds the world record in gross earnings with US$2.8 billion. The Lion King follows the journey of Simba, a young lion born into animal royalty.

When Simba is ousted into the wild by his evil uncle, he overcomes adversity with the help of his jungle friends to reclaim his crown as king of African wildlife.

So the executives of the stage play can say “Hakuna Matata” (a Swahili phrase that means "no worries") since their profits are good enough.
