"The US has put together a STRONG bid w/ Canada & Mexico for the 2026 World Cup," Trump posted on Twitter on Thursday.

"It would be a shame if countries that we always support were to lobby against the U.S. bid. Why should we be supporting these countries when they don't support us (including at the United Nations)?"

Trump's bid partners, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, voiced their support Friday.

"We can have differences but football unites us. Together we support the candidacy of Mexico, Canada and USA as the headquarters of the World Cup 2026," Pena tweeted.

Trudeau wrote: "Canada is fully behind the North American bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — and we're ready to welcome the world for an amazing tournament. Great to be partnered with @EPN and @RealDonaldTrump for this one."

Critics slammed Trump's comment as a complete violation of FIFA rules regarding political interference in the World Cup bidding process.

Soccer's ruling body declined to comment directly, but did guarantee a "fair, objective, and transparent" decision following a meeting with Moroccan bid chairman Moulay Hafid Elalamy last month.

French Football Federation President Noel Le Graet said his organization would vote for Morocco.

The final decision will be made in Moscow on June 13 and Morocco is expected to receive strong support from both African and Middle Eastern club members.
