The most pressing problem involve cases of women with children, which increased by 20 percent in December compared to the previous four months.

The number of cases delayed in U.S. immigration court reached a new record of 533,909 outstanding cases, according to a report released Tuesday.

The number of pending cases seeking political asylum or appealing their deportation rose by 4.2 percent in the last four months, according to figures released by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.

The organization reported a total of 516,031 cases expected to be closed in immigration courts at the end of September, compared to 456,216 reported at the end of fiscal year 2015.

The number of such cases has increased considerably since fiscal year 2010 when 262,799 cases were recorded nationally, TRAC said.

The states reporting the longest delay are California, Texas, New York, Florida and Virginia.

According to TRAC, the most pressing problem is in cases of women with children, which increased by 20 percent in December compared to the previous four months.
