US President Trump Wants Europe To Spend More On Military

U.S. President Donald Trump is pressuring European countries to up their military spending, saying "It's not fair" and singling out Germany in particular, which "has to spend more money."

Referencing Spain and France, Trump said "It's not fair what they've done to the United States," apparently referring to lower levels of defense spending.

Last month, Trump complained that NATO members that did not contribute fully to the alliance would be "dealt with," and he singled out Germany as not doing enough.

A major summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is coming up in Brussels on July 11 and 12, where spending targets are expected to be a major topic.

"NATO is very interesting and we're going to see what happens there," Trump said about the upcoming meeting.

Trump has reportedly sent letters to NATO allies, detailing his demands for the summit. Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel took offense to this, saying: "I am not very impressed by this type of letter."

After a largely unsuccessful G7 summit, and trade tensions between the United States and Europe, many are wondering if the years of the United States and Europe being tight geopolitical allies are waning.
