Dolan is on the island since last Friday, attending to other commitments as a tour by church associated institutions under the invitation of President Miguel Diaz-Canel and the Cuban Bishops' Conference.

According to Dolan, the center is a reference point for solidarity and humanism that is in line with the preaching of the Church, and he called it a biblical example of values and solidarity. The medical school is located in the west part of the Cuban capital, more than 29 000 doctors have passed through their classrooms and near to 200 from the U.S., mainly from poor families.

As part of his activities in Cuban territory, Dolan officiated masses, one of them in the Minor Basilica of the Virgin of The Charity del Cobre, in Santiago de Cuba and in the Metropolitan Cathedral, in Havana. The archbishop also visited the University of Havana, where he paid tribute to Felix Varela's remains an advocator of Cuban identity and nationality.

The Dean of the High Studies Center Dionisio Zaldivar spoke about the history of the institution and the academic program. On his part, the Brooklyn Bishop Monsignor Octavio Cisneros, evoked Varela's devotion to the sick, the needed and migrants during his stay in New York.

The Cuban Catholic Church advocates for father Varela's canonization and started all the protocol steps in the Vatican with that objective.
