Mexican Women Protested Femicides at National Palace

A large group of women demonstrated in front of the National Palace and other places of Mexico City to protest about femicides, such as Ingrid Escamilla's, carried out by her partner, Erick Francisco, EFE News Agency reported.

The protests began early on Friday morning outside the National Palace, where President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador lives, and where he daily delivers his morning conference.

“We want us alive” and “They are killing us”, were some of the slogans wrote on the walls against the gender violence and discrimination, a concerning issue that remains on the rise. They also threw balloons full of red paint at the front door of the Palace.

"We are asking you to fulfill your obligations," the statement of the protesters asked Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's administration to take charge on the matter and reproached his political priorities.

The tension grew and they set fire to the roofs of the statues in front of the National Palace, security guards immediately intervened with fire extinguishers. Some of the protesters sprayed the police masks and their clothes with aerosols.

The Undersecretary of Government, Arturo Medina, who went out to address the situation, was also sprayed by the protesters.

"We will not fall into confrontations, their slogan is respected but we will not allow aggressions and violence against the enclosures, we are with the gender alert, we will respect what they have to say, but all in the framework of peace", Medina expressed.

The protests on Friday will be added to another one that will be held on Saturday, in the building where Ingrid Escamilla was killed, located in the Vallejo neighborhood.

Her murder has put the focus on two recurrent topics: femicide and the treatment of certain media outlets of them. The Mexican Prosecutor's Office is investigating six agents for filtering the most morbid photos of the assassination.

Twentyfive-year-old, Ingrid Escamilla was brutally murder last Sunday, by her boyfriend Francisco Robledo, who was found with bloodstains and next to her body. The case was public after brutal pictures of the crime were posted in social media platforms causing a general outrage in Mexican society.
