Nicaragua Greets Belizeans on the Anniversary of St. George’s Caye Battle

On Sept. 10, Belizeans celebrate an important milestone in their national history and identity.

On Monday, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega sent a letter to Belize’s Prime Minister Johnny Briceño, offering warm greetings on the occasion of the anniversary of the Battle of St. George’s Caye.

“On behalf of the people and Government of Reconciliation and National Unity of the Republic of Nicaragua, and on our own behalf, we extend our congratulations to you, your government, and the brotherly people of Belize on the occasion of commemorating the 226th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of St. George’s Caye, this coming September 10th,” he said.

“On this historic date, we reaffirm our commitment to strengthening the ties of solidarity, brotherhood, and cooperation that unite our peoples and governments. From our always blessed and always free Nicaragua, we send our fraternal greetings, with the affection of the Nicaraguan people to the Belizean people,” Ortega emphasized.

On Sept. 10, Belizeans celebrate an important milestone in their national history and identity. From Sept. 3rd to 10th, 1798, the inhabitants of that territory fought against the Spanish Empire and emerged victorious, thereby affirming their ideal of self-determination.
