The information was confirmed by a press release issued by the medical centre.

Humberto Ortega, 77, suffered a heart-respiratory arrest in the early hours of the morning and, despite the doctors’ efforts to revive him, was declared dead at 2:30 a.m. on the same day.

The medical corps reported that, although cardiopulmonary resuscitation exercises were performed, the former military chief failed to overcome the episode.

The retired general, who played a key role in Nicaragua’s military history, was admitted to emergency care last Sunday due to complications related to several pre-existing conditions.

Ortega suffered from chronic arterial hypertension, type 2 diabetes, a pacemaker and chronic heart failure, among other conditions.

At admission, the condition was aggravated by an infection in the soft tissue of the left lower limb, resulting in sepsis and heart failure.

During his stay at the Military Hospital, the doctors managed to stabilize his health, allowing him to be transferred to a hospital ward. However, his condition worsened and the fatal outcome occurred in the early hours of 30 September.

Humberto Ortega was a prominent figure in the Nicaraguan army and played an important role during the Sandinista Revolution. Throughout his life he was a defender of national sovereignty and held various positions in the country’s military.
