On January 4, 1948, Myanmar achieved independence from the United Kingdom.

On Saturday, Myanmar will commemorate another anniversary of its independence from the United Kingdom, achieved in 1948. Formerly known as Burma, this Southeast Asian nation was under British colonial rule for 124 years, beginning in 1824 with the outbreak of the First Anglo-Burmese War.

On January 4, 1948, Myanmar gained its independence, thanks to the efforts of nationalist leaders such as General Aung San, who played a pivotal role in negotiating the terms. However, Aung San was tragically assassinated in July 1947, six months before the country achieved independence.

Myanmar chose to become a fully sovereign republic and did not remain part of the British Commonwealth, marking a distinction from many other former British colonies.

Upon independence, the country adopted a parliamentary democracy. However, it faced recurring political instability, ethnic conflicts, and economic challenges, which led to the rise of authoritarian regimes dominating much of Myanmar’s post-independence history.

On Friday, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega sent greetings to Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, Prime Minister of the Myanmar’s State Administration Council, on the occasion of the anniversary of his country’s independence.

“On the occasion of commemorating the 77th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar this coming January 4th, we convey our fraternal congratulations to you and the brotherly people of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar,” he said.

“On this special date, we send from our Nicaragua, always blessed and always free, our most sincere wishes of prosperity, peace, and well-being, reaffirming our will to continue consolidating the bonds of fraternity, brotherhood, and cooperation that unite our peoples. Receive, brother Prime Minister, our fraternal and revolutionary embrace, with the affection of the Nicaraguan people for the beloved people of Myanmar,” the Nicaraguan leader added.
