Following the directives of the President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, and the National System for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation, and Attention (SINAPRED) have issued a series of orientations about the arrival of Tropical Storm Sara, declaring Yellow Alert in the territory.
It reports that currently, Sara is located 45 km southwest of Guanaja Island, Honduras, and 278.7 km west-northwest of Cabo Gracias a Dios, moving slowly westward and is expected to change direction towards the northwest heading for Belize over the weekend.
Intense rainfall is anticipated in Nicaragua over the next three days, especially in the northern and central Pacific regions of the country. These rains could lead to flash floods and landslides, particularly in volcanic and mountainous areas.
Authorities have urged SINAPRED co-directors to activate response plans in affected territories and ensure that early warning mechanisms are functioning. First response institutions must be prepared to act against possible floods and landslides.
The population is advised to remain calm and follow the continuously issued instructions. Additionally, shelters are being prepared for families needing assistance during the passage of the weather phenomenon.
Authorities have also emphasized the importance of reviewing the availability of resources and institutional means to ensure timely assistance to affected individuals. Communication between communities and authorities must remain active to ensure an effective response to any eventuality.
Tropical Storm Sara has already wreaked havoc in Honduras, where over several people have been reported affected by floods and landslides. Authorities in Belize are also on alert for Sara’s imminent arrival, with preparations underway to mitigate the effects of the storm.
It is expected that the storm will make landfall in Belize between the night of Saturday, November 16, and Sunday, November 17.
