In a statement read on state television by a member of the Niger military junta, he announces this decision in solidarity “with the government and the people of Mali”.

The diplomatic crisis between Ukraine and the governments of Mali and Niger has arisen after the death in an ambush by rebel forces and the terrorist group al-Qaeda in the north of the country of dozens of Wagner Group fighters and several soldiers from Mali and Niger.

Last month, the three neighbouring countries of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, all governed by military governments, decided to join the Alliance of Sahel States in an anti-colonial and anti-Western stance.

In the communiqué read by the Nigerien junta, it is said that the government of Niger has learned “with great astonishment and great indignation the subversive and unacceptable purposes” of Ukraine in the region.

The Niger junta also reaffirms its support for the Malian armed forces “in their fight for the freedom and territorial integrity of Mali” and “strongly condemns this act of aggression, synonymous with support for international terrorism”.
