Similar clashes occurred in the states of Bauchi and Borno, both in the northeast of the country, the continent’s most populous with an estimated 182 million people, and the continent’s second largest oil producer.

On Thursday, crowds of demonstrators defied court-ordered restrictions and took to the streets of the capital and other Nigerian cities to protest the country’s economic crisis.

TV media reports show the gendarmes trying to contain the protesters gathered near the Presidential Villa in the capital with tear gas grenades.

A court in the capital had ruled the day before that the protest against the rising cost of living should be confined to a stadium in the capital, but the protesters clearly ignored the ruling.

In other areas there have been road blockades by both protesters and gendarmes, who have been mobilised for days in anticipation of a social explosion against the government of President Bola Tinubu, whose economic policies are questioned by social sectors and opposition parties.

There are also reports of clashes between participants in the marches and groups of Tinubu’s supporters.
