Nigerian police said they had arrested nearly 700 people in days of national protests against the high cost of living.

Recently, on Saturday, police said that rubber bullets and tear gas were fired at demonstrators in the capital, Abuja.

Amnesty International said 50 journalists were among the 681 people arrested during the three days of demonstrations. In addition, the international body said security forces had killed 13 protesters since Thursday, blaming them for using live bullets.

Nigerian police said they had arrested nearly 700 people in days of national protests against the high cost of living. The people who have been arrested are being charged by police with “armed robbery, arson, malice” and property damage.

Damilare Adenola, leader of the Take It Back group that organizes protests in Abuja, told police he shot at protesters on Saturday, who “gathered peacefully.”

“We will continue with the demonstrations,” he added.

They demand that the government reduce fuel prices and address Nigeria’s most severe economic crisis, with inflation peaking at 34% in 28 years.
