Nigerian forces arrest 69 members of the terrorist group Boko Haram

The Nigerian Army confirmed on Tuesday the surrender of 69 members of the jihadist group Boko Haram in the framework of a series of joint military operations with neighboring Cameroon against terrorist bases in Lake Chad.

“A combined maritime operation of Cameroonian and Nigerian forces led to the surrender of 69 Boko Haram terrorists. The group consisted of 13 adult men accompanied by 43 women and children,” a Nigerian army spokesman, Abukakar Abdullahi, said in a statement.

The events took place last Saturday in Lake Chad, shared by Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon.

“On the same date, twelve relatives of the terrorists were rescued, including five women and seven children,” the military spokesman added.

North-eastern Nigeria has been the target of attacks by Boko Haram since 2009, a violence that intensified since 2016 with the emergence of its split, the Islamic State in the West African Province (ISWAP).

Boko Haram and ISWAP have killed more than 35,000 people and caused some 2.7 million internally displaced persons, mainly in Nigeria, but also in neighbouring countries such as Cameroon, Chad and Niger, according to government and United Nations data.
