Authorities Respond
- Local authorities recovered and buried the bodies, according to a statement published on the Nouadhibou municipality’s Facebook page.
- The statement linked the deaths to the sinking of a migrant boat, though it did not specify when the incident occurred or how many people were on board.
Possible Nationalities of the Victims
- While officials did not confirm the victims’ nationalities, the burial took place in the presence of representatives from the Senegalese and Malian communities in Nouadhibou, suggesting that the deceased may have come from these countries.
A Dangerous Route to Europe
The migrants were reportedly attempting to reach Spain’s Canary Islands, a frequent but perilous route for those seeking to enter Europe via Mauritania.
