Norway defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 on Tuesday in a pivotal match in Dallas, becoming the first European nation to secure its place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16.
The victory for “The Vikings” ensures their progression to the next stage of the tournament, where they are scheduled to face Brazil.
This achievement is particularly significant given the unexpected early eliminations of other prominent European teams, notably Germany and the Netherlands, in the Round of 32.

The match began with Norway attempting to control possession, building on a rested squad after having strategically rotated players during their final group stage encounter against France. However, this initial dominance was short-lived as Ivory Coast adopted a well-organized defensive posture, patiently awaiting opportunities to launch dangerous counter-attacks. Several threatening plays emerged from “The Elephants,” including a shot from Konan that narrowly missed the post and a critical clearance by Ajer to prevent an own goal from a Pépé attempt.
As the first half neared its conclusion, the presence of Haaland in the box provided a focal point for Norway’s offense. Just two minutes later, Antonio Nusa, arguably German most impactful player in the opening half, showcased his skill. Dribbling on the edge of the large area, Nusa masterfully placed the ball into the top corner, giving Norway a 1-0 lead.
Almost immediately following Nusa’s stunning goal, and just before the Venezuelan referee Valenzuela sent the teams to the locker room, Sorloth moved from his less productive position on the right wing into the penalty area. He delivered an excellent pass to Haaland, but the prolific number nine’s shot was effectively blocked by Sangare, denying Norway a second goal before the break.
Haaland Secures Victory
The second half opened with Ivory Coast pushing for an equalizer. Nyland, Norway’s goalkeeper, made a crucial one-on-one save against Nicolas Pépé, thwarting an immediate response. Forced to attack, the African team began to leave spaces at the back, which Norway nearly exploited when a corner kick from Odegaard was miraculously cleared off the line by the newly introduced Amad Diallo. However, Diallo soon became a protagonist in the opposing penalty area.
The Manchester United player executed a quick one-two pass with Pépé on the right wing, dribbled expertly into the box, and finished with his left foot against the advancing goalkeeper with 15 minutes remaining in regular time. The match appeared destined for extra time, mirroring other tight contests in the tournament, but Haaland had other plans, demonstrating his predatory instincts.
The Manchester City striker, who had been largely quiet throughout the match, adhered to the fundamental principle of great goal scorers: appearing when it matters most. Haaland tapped in a low cross from Berg, securing the late victory for the Nordic selection. As time expired, and to further cement his status as a key figure on the field, Nyland made another vital save, expertly batting away a powerful free-kick from Diallo that was headed for the top corner.
Despite not delivering a sparkling performance and conceding possession for significant periods, Norway secured its passage to the next stage. Haaland’s goal tally for this World Cup now stands at five, placing him just one goal behind Messi.
Norway now faces a formidable challenge next July 5 against Brazil, a strong contender for the title, where they will need to demonstrate their full capabilities.
