“Ukraine needs more support to weaken Russian maritime forces in the Black Sea in the future. This is necessary to protect the Ukrainian population and infrastructure from attacks by the Russian Black Sea Fleet,” stated Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
“The support is also crucial for safeguarding the export of grain and other goods that provide significant income to Ukraine,” Støre added.
This new aid package will also be used to acquire equipment for naval mine-clearing operations and to fund the training of Ukrainian Navy soldiers at the maritime training center in Romania.
Norwegian Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram emphasized that naval mines pose a significant challenge to maritime safety and traffic in the Black Sea due to the complexities of mine-clearing operations.
“The systems we are providing will enable Ukrainian forces to better detect and neutralize mines along their own coast,” he said.
This donation is part of a total allocation of 22.5 billion Norwegian kroner (approximately 1.913 billion euros) to provide military support to Ukraine through 2025 under the so-called Nansen Program.
