This Tuesday, Norway defeated Iraq 4-1 during the first matchday of Group I in the World Cup 2026, positioning the European team at the top of their zone.

Under the guidance of coach Stale Solbakken, the Scandinavian team utilized their world-class talents to establish control over the midfield, neutralising the initial offensive incursions of the Asian squad.

This engagement held immense symbolic weight, as both national teams ended decades of absence from the premier international association football tournament.

The Asian squad, known as the “Lions of Mesopotamia“, generated the first opportunity of the match in the 11th minute. Striker Ali Al-Hamadi executed a quick shot from the edge of the penalty box, which went over the crossbar.

Despite the initial Iraqi pressure, the Norway’s team opened the scoring in the 29th minute. Left-back David Moller Wolfe delivered a precise low cross toward the far post, allowing striker Erling Haaland to slide and push the ball into the net.

The Iraqi national team responded in the 38th minute. Winger Ali Jassim surpassed defender Julian Ryerson on the left wing and assisted Amir Al-Ammari, who sent a floating cross into the penalty area. Striker Aymen Hussein connected with a header to secure the temporary equalizer.

However, a conceptual defensive error by the Iraqi defense allowed the Scandinavians to regain the lead in the 42nd minute. Erling Haaland pressured goalkeeper Jalal Hachim, causing the goalkeeper’s clearance to deflect off the striker’s leg and enter the goal, establishing a 2-1 scoreline before halftime.

In the final minutes of the first half, Iraq nearly equalized again. Ibrahim Bayesh executed a volley that went wide, and Ali Al-Hamadi missed a clear opportunity against goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.

In the second half, the European side consolidated their victory. In the 31st minute of the period, midfielder Martin Odegaard delivered a corner kick to the near post, where defender Leo Oestigaard leaped to header the ball into the net.

During the final minutes, the Norwegian team sustained their offensive pressure. Midfielder Kristian Thorstvedt secured the final four goals to one scoreline in the 51st minute of the second half, completing a dominant performance for the European side.

For Iraq, the match served as a platform to exhibit the resilience of a population that continues to defend its national identity through sports despite complex historical adversities.

With this result, Norway shares the top position of Group I with France, holding three points but possessing a superior goal difference. Iraq occupies the fourth position with zero points.

On the second matchday, scheduled for June 22, the Scandinavian team will face Senegal, while the Iraqi team will play against France to decide their future in the tournament.
