The OCHA Geneva Director and representative, Ramesh Rajasingham, detailed that “last year 289 humanitarian workers lost their lives in 33 countries, making it the deadliest year on record for the entire global humanitarian community”.

He added that this figure is more than double the number in 2022, when there were 118 deaths and twice as many deaths as the annual average for the last 20 years.

OCHA said that 2024 “may be on the way to an even more deadly outcome”, when 172 humanitarian workers are recorded as martyred by 7 August.

In Gaza, at least 289 humanitarian workers were killed, mainly by Israeli air strikes.

“Extreme levels of violence in Sudan and South Sudan have also contributed to the rise of deaths,» according to the agency.

“In the Sudan and many other places, humanitarian workers are attacked, killed, wounded and abducted. We demand an end to impunity so that perpetrators can face justice”, he said.

The UN’s Acting Humanitarian Chief, Joyce Msuya, said that “normalization of violence against aid workers and lack of accountability are unacceptable”.
