In Marseille, the wind wasn’t very cooperative this Wednesday, and even the first start of the competition was interrupted due to the low wind intensity. However, in the second start, the race was able to be completed.

Australian Matt Wearn, gold medalist in Tokyo 2020 and current world champion, reclaimed the top position. The silver medal was won by Cypriot Pavlos Kontides, and the bronze medal went to Peruvian Stefano Peschiera. They finished in the same positions in the qualifying heats held through Monday.

Peschiera, 29 years old and arriving in Marseille ranked 36th in the world, finished 25th in this class at Tokyo 2020 and 31st in Rio 2016. Now, however, the Peruvian sailor managed to leap to bronze.

Chilean sailor Clemente Seguel, ranked 32nd in the world, also stood out in the competitions, finishing in eighth place in the Medal Race.

“Sailing has been an Olympic sport since the first Olympiad in 1896 and has changed significantly over the years since. But while the sport of sailing at the Olympic Games has always undergone changes, arguably Paris 2024 will see one of, if not the, biggest changes to the event format in the recent history of the Games,” the newspaper Yachting World recalled.

“Of the 10 Olympic Sailing events in Paris 2024, 50 percent are new to the Olympic Games. And for four of these events, the newly introduced Formula Kite for men and women, and the foiling windsurfer for men and women, there will be new formats that may well be unfamiliar to anyone who has watched Olympic sailing previously,” it added.
