Olympics: Van Rouwendaal Wins Gold in 10K Open Water Swimming

In the previous Olympic Games, the Dutch swimmer won the gold medal in Rio de Janeiro and the silver medal in Tokyo.
On Thursday, Sharon van Rouwendaal won the gold medal in the 10-kilometer open water swimming event in the Seine River.

The Australian Moesha Johnson claimed the silver medal, and the Italian Ginevra Tadeucci took the bronze medal. The Brazilian Ana Marcela Cunha, on this occasion, had to settle for fourth place.
In the days leading up to the competition, the athletes’ attention was focused on the water quality of the Seine. However, today, what influenced the race were the strong currents generated in the Parisian river.
Before the race started, the swimmers had little time to study the currents. Their training in the Seine was suspended on Tuesday due to water conditions and could only resume for ten minutes on Wednesday.
Sharon van Rouwendaal is a Dutch athlete who has become a legend in swimming competitions, both in the pool and in open water. Between 2012 and 2024, she participated in four Summer Olympic Games, winning three medals: gold in Rio de Janeiro 2016, silver in Tokyo 2020, and gold in Paris 2024.
Van Rouwendaal also won ten medals at the World Swimming Championships between 2011 and 2024 and three medals at the 2014 World Short Course Swimming Championships.
The Dutch athlete obtained twelve medals at the European Swimming Championships between 2014 and 2022 and four medals at the European Short Course Swimming Championships between 2010 and 2015.
