In 2000, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) established International Migrants Day to shed light on the challenges, hardships, and obstacles faced by those forced to leave their countries of origin due to factors such as economic crises, political and military violence, and climate change. Below are some key global migration statistics from the IOM’s 2024 report:

-. The United Arab Emirates has the highest proportion of migrants relative to its total population.

-. 3.6% of the global population lives in a country other than where they were born. This amounts to 281 million people, including 135 million women and 146 million men, based on the latest definitive figures. This number has grown by 84% over the past three decades.

-. 10.1% of all migrants—or 28 million people—are children.

-. Around 8,500 migrants died or went missing in 2023 while attempting to reach their destination.

-. At least 117.1 million people are forcibly displaced, including: 35.3 million refugees, 5.4 million asylum seekers, 5.2 million displaced individuals with specific protection needs, and 71.2 million people displaced within their own countries

-. 62.5 million people have been displaced due to conflict and violence, while 8.7 million have been displaced by disasters.

-. There are 169 million migrant workers globally.

-. International remittances totaled $831 billion in 2022. The majority of these remittances—$647 billion—went to low- and middle-income countries.

-. India, Mexico, China, the Philippines, and Egypt received the largest remittance inflows, with India leading significantly after becoming the first country to receive over $100 billion annually.

-. The migration corridor from Mexico to the U,S. is the largest in the world, with approximately 11 million people. The second-largest corridor is from Syria to Turkey, involving nearly 4 million people.

-. It is estimated that 40% of all migrants globally were born in Asia, with half of them originating from six countries: India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Afghanistan.

-. Since 1970, the U.S. has been the top destination for migration. The number of its foreign-born residents has quadrupled during that time, surpassing 50 million people.

-. Germany is the second-largest destination for migration.
