The situation in Gaza has become increasingly alarming, according to a recent report by the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), which has denounced that at least a hundred children are killed or injured daily since Israel resumed its offensive in the Strip. Since the attacks began, over 1,200 people have lost their lives, and the humanitarian crisis worsens with each passing day.

Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, shared on his X account that “nothing justifies the killing of children,” emphasizing the tragedy of young lives cut short in a conflict they did not provoke. UNICEF’s figures are equally heartbreaking: since the ceasefire with Hamas was broken on March 18, 322 Palestinian children have died, and 609 have been injured.

The UNRWA statement also highlights that one million children in Gaza are suffering due to intense bombardment and the total blockade imposed by Israel, which has restricted the entry of humanitarian aid for over a month.

The prolonged war has had a devastating toll: more than 15,000 children killed, 34,000 injured, and nearly one million displaced since October 7, 2023, when Israel launched a large-scale operation in response to attacks by the Islamist group Hamas.

Lazzarini described the resumption of the conflict as turning Gaza into a “forbidden land” for Palestinian children, noting that they are being stripped of their childhood amid chaos and violence. “This is a stain on our shared humanity,” he stated, urgently calling for the reinstatement of the ceasefire that, earlier this year, had offered Gazan children a chance to survive and live as children.

The situation in Gaza underscores not only the humanitarian dimension of the conflict but also the pressing need for dialogue leading to a peaceful and sustainable resolution. The numbers serve as a harrowing reminder of the human cost of war, particularly among the most vulnerable: children.
