Over 60 million people are under alerts, and the states most impacted by this Arctic cold wave—bringing snow, ice, rain, and strong winds—include Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky, where authorities have issued warnings against travel.

Local leaders have urged residents to stay off the roads, many of which are covered in ice or snow, leaving vehicles at risk of becoming stranded. In fact, numerous accidents have already been reported: in Missouri, there were 285 crashes today, resulting in 27 injuries, according to the Highway Patrol.

The airports most affected by cancellations are in St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri, followed by Dallas-Fort Worth in Texas, which has experienced hundreds of delays throughout the day, and Chicago O’Hare in Illinois.

The severe weather has also caused power outages affecting more than 110,000 households, primarily in Kentucky (44,700) and Missouri (32,200), with smaller numbers in Illinois (21,800), Texas (12,700), and Louisiana (9,500), according to the PowerOutage website.

The National Weather Service (NWS) stated that the storm will move from the central U.S. plains toward the East Coast, with significant snow accumulation expected in a swath stretching from Ohio to Washington, D.C. The warmer portion of the storm, expected to move east from Arkansas into Alabama, could produce severe thunderstorms capable of generating tornadoes and damaging winds.

Washington, D.C. is forecasted to receive at least six inches of snow. Mayor Muriel Bowser has declared a state of emergency and announced the closure of public schools. However, this will not prevent lawmakers from certifying Donald Trump’s electoral victory.

On Sunday, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy was the latest to declare a state of emergency to mobilize resources ahead of the coming hours, stating that at least six inches of snow are expected in southern counties.
