PAHO reported that as of July, 8,078 confirmed cases of Oropouche were reported in the region, with two deaths.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an epidemiological alert on Saturday demanding to strengthen surveillance and implement laboratory diagnosis of the Oropouche virus (OROV).

In this way, the entity responded to the rise of disease and spread to new geographical areas and the registration of deaths associated with the disease and high transmissibility.

He also reported that cases are recorded in five countries: Bolivia (356), Brazil (7,284, including two deaths), Colombia (74), Cuba (74) and Peru (290).

The disease, transmitted primarily by the bite of an insect known as jején (Culicoides), has concentrated in the Amazon region.
However, due to climate change, deforestation and unplanned urbanization helped its spread in non-Amazon states of Brazil and countries where there were no cases reported, such as Bolivia and Cuba.
