PAHO Reports 9.852 Cases of Oropuche Fever in 2024

PAHO issued an epidemiological alert for the disease on August 1, 2024.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported that cases of Oropouche fever increased to more than 9,800 in the Americas region this year.

The agency issued an epidemiological alert on August 1, and as of September 6, there have been 1,774 additional cases of Oropouche in six nations, increasing the total to 9,852 confirmed cases this year.

The Organization called for increased surveillance, reporting of any unusual event and improved vector prevention and surveillance measures.

In a statement, he said that the virus was detected in 2024 in areas where there had been no previous reported transmission. In addition, deaths associated with infection have been reported as well as cases of vertical transmission».

Brazil was also reported to be the most affected nation with 7,931 cases and two deaths; however, infestations were recorded in Bolivia (356 cases), Colombia (74), Cuba (506), Peru (930) and, recently, the Dominican Republic (33).

He also detailed the PAHO that are reported cases imported in the United States (21) and Canada (1). These are people who have travelled to endemic countries. In addition, 30 cases imported into Europe have been documented.

Regarding the transfer from mother to fetus, a case of fetal death and congenital abnormality was confirmed in Brazil. Research is currently being carried out on the archives of others infections deseases.

«Oropouche fever is a viral disease characterized by high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain. In some cases, it can cause more serious complications such as meningitis or encephalitis», explained the PAHO.

He also added that «most people recover completely, there is no specific treatment and prevention is essential».

The virus is primarily transferred through the bite of infected insects, small insects that usually bite during the day and inhabit wet areas with organic matter and wooded areas.

PAHO emphasized the need to put preventive measures into practice, especially for pregnant women.
