According to the police, the victim admitted that he had published the fake news but claimed that he copied the information from social networks.
Pakistani authorities arrested a journalist on charges of spreading false information on Tuesday following a stabbing in the UK that killed three girls, including an event that triggered a series of riots and violence against immigrants and the Muslim community in that country.

A spokesman for the Lahore Police, Azeem Bajwa, reported that the subject, identified as Farhan Asif, an independent web developer, was arrested “for his connection to spreading false information which led to violent incidents in the UK”.
Riots broke out in late July in Southport after Axel Rudakubana, a Welsh-born Rwandan, attacked several people with a knife at a recreation centre, killing three girls and injuring several others.
The extreme right’s unrest increased when the false news published by Asif that the perpetrator of the crime was a Muslim, asylum seeker and had crossed the English Channel in a pawn spread through social media.
The riots by far-right groups included fires, looting and racist attacks on mosques and immigration centres.
Asif’s arrest came after a British channel accused him of being the source of the disinformation surrounding the stabbing.
The case was handed over to the Federal Investigation Agency, which handles the cyber-terrorism related proceedings.
