The information was confirmed by the Palestinian ambassador in Moscow, Abdel Hafiz Nofal, who pointed out that the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, accepted the invitation to participate in the BRICS summit to be held in the Russian city of Kazan.

Nofal said it had not yet been decided whether the Palestinian representation would be occupied by Abbas himself or whether Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa would take his place. But he stressed the importance of having Palestine represented at the event, regardless of who finally comes on behalf of the PNA.

Russia’s invitation to Palestine to attend the BRICS summit is framed in the context of a continuing cooperative relationship between the two countries.

On 13 August, Abbas met with Putin during his official visit to Moscow, where both leaders discussed the situation in the Middle East, with special attention to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

In parallel to this invitation, the foreign ministers of the BRICS member countries issued a joint statement expressing their support for Palestinian membership as a full member of the United Nations (UN).

In this document, the commitment to the creation of a sovereign, independent and viable Palestinian state was reiterated, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the internationally recognized borders of June 1967».

They also expressed «grave concern about the deteriorating situation in the occupied Palestinian territory» and called for immediate delivery of humanitarian assistance to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
