A total of 110 Palestinian prisoners were freed:
- 32 sentenced to life imprisonment
- 48 with varying sentences
- 30 minors
Many returnees showed signs of physical abuse, torture, and malnutrition from their time in Israeli prisons.
Despite the significance of the event, Israel has banned any public celebrations related to the release. According to Al Jazeera, Israeli police arrested 12 civilians in Kafr Aqab, an occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood, for taking part in the celebrations.
Medical Evaluations & Deportations
- 23 released detainees were deported to Egypt immediately.
- Nine Gazans arrived at Khan Younis European Hospital in ambulances, welcomed by a massive crowd.
- The freed individuals range from 15 to 69 years old.
Families of the Gazan prisoners anxiously awaited medical assessments of their loved ones, many of whom endured over a decade in maximum-security Israeli prisons, suffering torture and abuse that left lasting physical and psychological scars.
In a statement, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas welcomed the release and reaffirmed its commitment to securing freedom for all Palestinians held in Israeli prisons and all occupied territories.
The Prisoners’ Press Office called the release a victory, demonstrating the effectiveness of Palestinian resistance in forcing Israel to open its prisons.
Although a ceasefire agreement remains in effect in Gaza, the Israeli military killed at least ten people in Tammun, occupied West Bank, as part of its “Iron Wall” ethnic cleansing operation.
Meanwhile, Israel has imposed restrictions on UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, a vital provider of humanitarian aid for Palestinians facing genocide, deprivation of water, electricity, food, education, and basic life necessities.
