In Paraguay, the environmental situation has become alarming, with at least 29 active forest fires that have swept away vast areas of grasslands and forests in the Central and Cordillera departments.

The heat wave affecting the country, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, has intensified this problem, facilitating the rapid expansion of the fires.

Ray Mendoza, the second commander of the Paraguayan Volunteer Fire Corps (CBVP), has indicated that the largest number of fires is concentrated in the Cordillera department, although there have also been outbreaks of fire in Central and Misiones.

Drought conditions and intense heat have also been identified as key factors increasing the risk of forest fires.

In the Cordillera, localities such as Caacupé, Atyrá, and Santa Elena have suffered severe damage, with reports of between eight and 15 hectares of vegetation consumed by the flames in each area.

Experts from the National Forestry Institute (Infona) have identified 16 active fires across the country, affecting both native forests and three palm-bearing areas.

In addition, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADES) has identified five critical points in protected areas, highlighting the gravity of this environmental crisis.

The current situation not only poses a threat to local ecosystems but also puts public health and food security at risk in Paraguay.

Environmental protection must be a priority to ensure a sustainable future for future generations.
