Speaking from Haiti, where he is currently located, Petro announced ongoing communications with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to design a joint strategy to eradicate armed gangs. The plan focuses particularly on the Catatumbo region, a historically conflict-prone area known for its geopolitical complexity.

Through social media, Petro stated, “I have been in contact with the current Venezuelan government from Haiti and have delegated my Minister of Defense to engage directly with his counterpart to establish a joint plan to eradicate armed gangs along the border.”

Petro revealed that discussions included measures to seal illegal crossing points, particularly along the Catatumbo River, and coordinate aerial surveillance on both sides of the border. “I have spoken with the individual currently presiding in Venezuela to address illegal routes and enhance coordinated surveillance efforts,” Petro said.

The initiative aims to close strategic pathways used by narcotrafficking groups, responding to criticism in Colombian media about perceived government inaction on border issues.

Petro’s proactive approach underscores his administration’s commitment to tackling complex security challenges in coordination with neighboring Venezuela. The plan also highlights the importance of international collaboration in addressing cross-border threats effectively.
