The National Council for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (NDRRMC) reported in a newsletter that Trami, known as Kristina in the Philippines, and the eleventh tropical storm this year, will land in the north tonight or tomorrow with sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gusts of up to 105 km/h.

The Government of Manila, as well as those in other localities on the northern island of Luzon, issued today announcements announcing the closure tomorrow of public schools and offices, while the Army was involved in rescue operations in Bicol and other regions before the storm arrived tonight or tomorrow.

On Wednesday, classes were already closed in parts of Luzon due to the first effects of the storm, which is approaching from the Pacific Ocean and has already caused floods and landslides.

The Meteorological Department indicated that the storm may increase in intensity before it touches land, but they believe it is unlikely to reach typhoon status and will weaken as it crosses Luzon and heads into the South China Sea.

The Coast Guard, for its part, reported that about 3,400 people are stranded in some thirty ports of the country due to the storm created by Trami.

The Philippines suffers about 20 typhoons and tropical storms per year, especially in the rainy season, which usually starts in June and ends in November or December.
