“Maintaining peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) must remain the priority between India and China,” Modi said during a meeting held on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan.
“We believe that the relationship between India and China is very important not only for our peoples but also for global peace, stability, and progress,” he added.
On Monday, Beijing and New Delhi confirmed the conclusion of a military de-escalation in their border areas, which will take effect in the coming months, although the specifics have yet to be detailed.
“We welcome the consensus reached on the issues that have arisen over the past four years at the border. Mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity must continue to be the foundation of our relations,” Modi said.
The agreement signed by India and China will allow Indian soldiers to return to the border patrols that existed before the incident in the northern Ladakh region, in the Himalayas. Indian Foreign Affairs Secretary Vikram Misri said that Modi emphasized to Xi the importance of “not allowing differences over boundary-related matters to disrupt peace and tranquility at the borders.”
These two Asian countries are engaged in a long-standing dispute over several regions in the Himalayas, such as Aksai Chin, which is administered by China but claimed by India. They also have disputes in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, where China claims some territories.
