“We have passed a resolution, as a result of which the interior ministry will issue a decree on the establishment of a buffer zone on the border with Belarus,” he announced at a press conference after a government meeting held in Bialystok in northeastern Poland.

The move aims to make it difficult for illegal migrants to cross the border and to establish better conditions for border guards, police and soldiers, he added.

According to Tusk, the buffer zone would cover a stretch of several dozen kilometers and reach a depth of around 200 meters.

On Monday, Polisth authorities also informed that a man was killed and another injured in an explosion at an ammunition plant in central Poland. Following the explosion, firefighters battled to put out a fire in one of the warehouses at the Mesko plant in the city of Skarzysko-Kamienna in central Poland, which is the largest town of the Skarzysko County, 34 km north-east of the regional capital of Kielce.

Mesko, which produces missiles and other ammunition, belongs to the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ). According to a statement issued by PGZ, the accident took place at around 10 a.m. Jaroslaw Gwozdz, press officer of the local police told the Polish Press Agency (PAP) that a 59-year-old employee died in the accident and another man was taken to hospital.

Daniel Prokopowicz, spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Kielce, said the accident is being investigated under the prosecutor’s supervision.

“Information about the circumstances and causes of the accident will be provided after the work is completed,” Prokopowicz was quoted as saying by the PAP.

In April, a trial began at the District Court in Skarzysko-Kamienna regarding two other fatal accidents that occurred at the Mesko plant in 2021. Two women in their forties died there as a result of two explosions.
