Police Repress the Protests Against the Murder and Rape of a Doctor in Calcutta, India

Police forces in India fired tear gas and pressurized water at several groups of demostratrors who protests against the murder and rape of a 31 years-old doctor in Calcutta, the violent repression has so far not left dead.

In addition to the injured, police have arrested 4 students participating in the protests and they have blocked main arteries with repressive groups to stop the demonstrations.

These manifestations have become common since the crime against the medical resident in a hospital in Calcutta, West Bengal, the demonstrators claim that the authorities in the region have not carried out proper investigation processes and far from giving visibility to the case they have ignored it.

They also protest the lack of security for doctors and other health personnel in the subcontinent.

There have also been complaints about the vulnerability of women in India, who are commonly victims of both physical and sexual violence.

Since the doctor’s incident, several women’s rights and human rights activists have called for increased penalties for sexual crimes as well as against women.

The family of the health worker has denounced the existence of connections between regional drug traffickers and the crime, citing that political figures are involved, as well the relatives of the victim assures that the rape was, actually, a gang rape.
