Polling Stations Close in Ecuador’s Presidential Election Run-Off

The polling stations for the second round of the presidential elections in Ecuador, which face the current president, Daniel Noboa, and the progressive candidate, Luisa González, closed an electoral day of ten hours uninterrupted and, and the counting began.

According to the president of the National Electoral Council (CNE) Diana Atamaint, the percentage of citizen participation in the second presidential round is 83.76%, surpassing the attendance in the first round.
“At this time, the 40,791 polling stations in the territory are beginning the counting phase. Members of the Voting Boards sort the ballots and carry out the public counting in the presence of delegates from political organizations, national and international observers and the media,” said Atamain.
In turn, the CNE director recalls that observers and witnesses have no restrictions to use their mobile devices while counting.
The top Electoral official, stated that abroad, voting has concluded in 66 electoral zones and in 31 zones the voting day continues, which will end at 19:00, according to the different time zones.
Atamain also cleared out that although there are 2 companies authorized to carry out exit polls, “these do not constitute official results and, therefore, should not be taken as a definitive source of information.”
The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Ecuador, through its Control and Dissemination of Results Center, which has the accreditation of national and international media, urged citizens to political organizations and the media to remain calm and have confidence in the electoral process.
The elections in Ecuador were held under extreme security measures, with a massive deployment of police and military forces due to the state of emergency decreed by Noboa in several provinces and Quito to combat organized crime.
