On Monday, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis approved the decree of the miracle that will lead to the canonization of Mother Carmen Rendiles.

Carmen Elena Rendiles Martinez (1903-1977) was the founder of the Congregation of the Servants of Jesus. She was beatified on June 16, 2018, after the approval of a miracle involving the healing of a Venezuelan doctor in July 2003.
The second miracle approved for her to be declared a saint was a “miraculous healing, attributed to her intercession, of a woman who was diagnosed in 2015 with idiopathic triventricular hydrocephalus.” She will become the second Venezuelan saint after Jose Gregorio Hernandez.
The date of Rendiles’ canonization is not yet known, as Pope Francis will have to convene a consistory to determine the day. One possibility is that both Venezuelans could be proclaimed saints on the same day.
The beatification ceremony of the Venezuelan nun was held in Caracas before thousands of people and was presided over by the then-Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Angelo Amato, at the baseball stadium of the Central University of Venezuela.
The future Venezuelan saint came from a large and devout Catholic family and “had a special devotion to the poor, the sick, and priests, in whom she had no difficulty seeing the face of Christ,” according to the biography of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
She was born without her left arm, a malformation that caused some difficulties when entering a religious congregation, but it did not prevent her from pursuing her passion for art and drawing, which she gave up only after following her religious vocation.
“It is remarkable that the miracle recognized for her beatification was precisely the healing of an injured arm of a doctor who had suffered an excessively powerful electric shock during an operation,” the biography adds.
In 1965, when Mother Carmen was responsible for the Venezuelan and Colombian provinces of the Sisters Servants of Jesus of the Blessed Sacrament, she requested to separate from the French branch, naming her newly formed congregation the Servants of Jesus of Caracas.
“The year 2025 is full of formidable news in all areas. We receive with Christian joy and great expectation the announcement of our Saint, Mother Carmen Rendiles, a woman who was a balm, a genuine demonstration of God’s love on earth, with a legacy of proven miracles. Today, her canonization is ratified by the Catholic Church, through His Holiness Pope Francis,” President Nicolas Maduro stated.
“Venezuela renews its faith, and the world has more reasons to pray with us, to cry out for the hope and brilliance of our homeland, to illuminate and reach them. May God, Saint Jose Gregorio Hernandez, and Saint Carmen Rendiles bless Venezuela and beyond!” he added.
