Pope Francis has been hospitalized in Rome due to a respiratory infection and a “mild” fever, according to a statement issued by the Holy See this Friday.

The Vatican reported that, due to the persistence of symptoms, the Holy Father underwent specialized tests that revealed a respiratory infection. This diagnosis has led to Francis beginning treatment in the hospital. Although the fever is currently considered mild.

Since early February, the Pope had been battling a “strong cold,” as he himself described during a general audience. However, as the days passed, his health deteriorated, prompting the Holy See to take more drastic measures to ensure his well-being. In an effort to avoid complications, the pontiff chose to conduct his audiences from his residence at the Casa Santa Marta.

The Vatican’s statement also mentions that the Pope’s clinical condition is “stable,” suggesting that, while not critical, his recovery will require time and ongoing medical attention.

This marks the fourth time the Pope has been admitted to the Gemelli Hospital. Previously, the Argentine pontiff has faced complications related to the flu and respiratory issues, which led to a three-day hospitalization in March 2023. Additionally, in November 2023, these respiratory difficulties prevented him from traveling to Dubai for COP28.

Despite the health challenges he has faced, the Catholic community and the world at large remain hopeful for Pope Francis’s swift recovery.

His journey and words have been a source of inspiration for many, and it is hoped that he will soon return to his activities, continuing his work of promoting peace and unity in a world that greatly needs it.
