Pope Francis is stable and alternates non-invasive mechanical ventilation with oxygen therapy, always maintaining a good response to treatment, without new episodes of bronchospasm as suffered this Friday, reported the Vatican on Saturday.

“The Holy Father’s clinical condition remains stable, He is alternating between non-invasive mechanical ventilation and long periods of supplemental high-flow oxygenation, maintaining a good response to gas exchange,” reads a statement issued by the Vatican.

The Pope “not have a fever and shows no leukocytosis [high white blood cell count]”, so there has been no increase in the number of white blood cells, which could rule out an infection, while “hemodynamic parameters were always stable,” according to the statement.

In this regard, the statemnet says Francis’ haemodynamic parameters have always remained stable as “he has continued eat on his own and has regularly undergone respiratory physiotherapy, in which he cooperates actively. He has not experienced any further episodes of bronchospasm.”

The Vatican states that the Holy Father remains alert and oriented and specifies that he received the Eucharist on Saturday afternoon, “then devoted himself to prayer, but “the prognosis remains guarded.”

This morning, Vatican sources explained that Francis had a quiet night, had breakfast, and even drank coffee while reading the newspapers, always emphasizing that his clinical condition remains “complex,” but also that the bronchospasm affected exclusively the respiratory system and not other organs.
