World Leaders Issue Messages on the Death of Pope Francis
“The Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, on behalf of the Bolivarian government and the people, mourns with deep sorrow the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, pastor of the world, brother of the Global South, and steadfast defender of justice, peace, and the humblest.
Pope Francis was a transformative spiritual leader, whose clear and courageous voice denounced the inequalities of the dominant system and called for the construction of a more humane, more just, and deeply compassionate world.
From his Latin American identity, he gave momentum to a Church committed to the causes of the poor, the protection of Mother Earth, and dialogue among cultures and religions.
His Pontificate will be remembered for his deep option for the excluded, for his pastoral courage, and for his ability to renew hope among peoples. He was a man of God who did not hesitate to discomfort the powerful with the truth of the Gospel.
Venezuela will always remember him as a sincere friend, as the Pope who decisively promoted the canonization of Dr. Jose Gregorio Hernandez, a symbol of the Venezuelan people’s faith and a spiritual bridge between our struggles and our hope. We ask him, along with Mother Carmen Rendiles, to receive Pope Francis in the glory of God.
In this moment of spiritual reflection, the Venezuelan people unite in prayer, celebrating the luminous legacy of Francis: his love for others, his committed faith, and his testimony of humanity. His memory will live on in those of us who fight for a world of dignity, peace, and social justice.”
